Professors awarded grant for collaborative research project

Professors Richard Christiana, Becki Battista, and Joy James were awarded a $3,000 research grant from the U.S. Play Coalition in February during the 2015 Value of Play Conference in Clemson, SC.

Christiana and Battista are professors in the Department of Health and Exercise Science. James is a professor in the Department of Recreation Management and Physical Education. The three faculty members plan to use the research grant to fund a collaborative study in developing a pediatric prescription plan for outdoor play. The plan is designed to determine if the amount of time spent in outdoor play increases among children who are prescribed it by a pediatrician as well as assess the rate of compliance with the prescription among those children.

The U.S. Play Coalition was established in 2009 as a partnership to promote “the value of play throughout life.” The coalition consists of individuals and organizations recognizing play as a valuable and necessary part of a healthy and productive life. It is housed in Clemson University’s College of Health, Education, and Human Development and holds a yearly conference.
