App State Walk to Defeat ALS
March 30, 2019 — 10 a.m.
Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences
1179 State Farm Road
Boone, NC 28608
Appalachian State University, the Beaver College of Health Sciences, and Appalachian Regional Healthcare System invite you to the inaugural Defeat ALS Walk on March 30, 2019. The Walk to Defeat ALS is the #1 way to unite and fundraise for those living with ALS. Each year, fundraising through the Walk drives bold and urgent innovation as we march together toward a cure for ALS.
ALS usually strikes people between the ages of 40 and 70, and approximately 20,000 people in the U.S. have the disease at any given time. Although there is not yet a cure or treatment that halts ALS, scientists we fund through our global research program have made significant progress in understanding what causes ALS. But their work is not done and they need our help. Together, we work toward a cure.
In October 2017, Dr. Dane Ward, Dean of Libraries at Appalachian State University was diagnosed with ALS. Our community has chosen to honor him by coordinating an event to increase awareness of the disease and fundraise to find a cure.
Read Dr. Ward's letter to the editor of The Appalachian. He offers a candid view of his experience surrounding ALS: https://theappalachianonline.com/2018/10/17/letter-to-the-editor-fighting-als-at-app-state-with-your-help/
