Academic Advising in the Beaver College of Health Sciences

The Office of Advising and Academic Support welcomes you to the Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS) and we look forward to assisting you as you continue your academic career. Our office provides advising to help you understand academic requirements and make timely progress toward graduation.

Getting Started with a BCHS Advisor

Once you declare a major in health sciences, you will be assigned a professional academic advisor, who will contact you via your App State email to schedule your first appointment.  (Keep in mind that it can take several weeks to process new majors into BCHS.) You are required to meet with your advisor to develop your graduation plan, get college policy information, and learn about faculty mentoring.

Academic Progress

You can monitor your progress at any time by checking your DegreeWorks record online. In addition, our office will provide an audit when you apply for graduation. This audit will note potential scheduling and/or other issues so they may be corrected while there is still time to make adjustments in your academic program. This review is a service provided by our office and we strongly encourage you to review the graduation audit carefully.  Please remember that you are ultimately responsible for maintaining current knowledge of policies and for meeting all University requirements to complete your degree.

Student Resources

The Office of Advising & Academic Support is located in two places on campus. The primary office is situated in Suite 101A of the Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences. The Beaver College of Health Sciences Advising Satelite office is located in the Holmes Convocation Center. Location information is provided at the time appointments are scheduled and via appointment reminders.

You are welcome to contact us (828-262-8590) with questions.  Otherwise, please visit our BCHS Student web pages at http://healthsciences.appstate.edu/students.  There is a lot of important and useful information available online, including scholarships and forms for health science students.  There are also links to information about graduation and commencement, which are not the same thing. Students graduate when they fulfill all degree requirements; commencement is simply a ceremony to celebrate student accomplishments.
