App State is hosting a free documentary screening of The Only Doctor, an award-winning film chronicling the story of Dr. Karen Kinsell, a physician caring for an entire community in rural Clay County, Georgia.
The event, hosted by the Beaver College of Health Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences, will be held Thursday, Nov. 13, at 4 p.m. in the Dickson Lecture Hall in the Levine Hall of Health Sciences.
After the documentary concludes, film producer Anjanette Leveret will lead a discussion about its impact and will be joined via Zoom by Kinsell.
According to its website, The Only Doctor tells a contemporary story of rural healthcare in the United States through the experience of Kinsell, who for nearly 20 years has been the only doctor in a Southwest Georgia county. This film won the Peabody Award for Public Service in 2025 and was nationally broadcast on PBS as part of the Reel South series.
The film begins when Kinsell realizes she can no longer afford to volunteer full-time as the only doctor in a rural Georgia county. She remains committed to her community and looks for solutions, including forging a partnership with a medical university to keep her clinic open.
The event is sponsored by the University Forum Committee in partnership with AppDocs and the Beaver College of Health Sciences.
