Appalachian well represented at recent American College of Sports Medicine conference

The Southeast Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine (SEACSM) held its annual conference in Greenville, SC on February 18 through 20. Regional chapter members gathered to share, present, and discover new research within the field.

Second year student in the Appalachian Exercise Science graduate program Ashton Celec received first place in the master’s category of the SEACSM Student Research Award. Celec’s presentation and research, “Comparison of Maximal and Submaximal Oxygen Uptake Efficiency in the Out-Patient Cardiac Rehabilitation Setting,” was advised by Appalachian Assistant Professor of Exercise Science and Clinical Director of the Appalachian Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program at the Broyhill Wellness Center Dr. Jeffrey Soukup.

Student Research Awards given out each year at the regional meeting for doctoral, master’s, and undergraduate level students. Applicants for the Student Research Award must be enrolled in or have graduated from an institution in the Southeast region. The award for the first place winner is a plaque and a check sponsored by the SEACSM and ACSM.

Appalachian Athletic Training alumnus Mike McKenzie was voted in as President-Elect of SEACSM following the conference. McKenzie graduated from Appalachian with a bachelor of science in athletic training in 1999 and since received a master of science from the University of Florida and a PhD from UNC Greensboro. He is currently chair and associate professor in the Department of Exercise Physiology as well as the Director of Undergraduate Research at Winston-Salem State University.
