It has been an exciting week for the Beaver College of Health Sciences’ students, faculty and staff who attended classes during the first week of school at the newly completed Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences (LLHS). Smiles were abundant and the excitement was palpable. One of the most often heard quotes from the students when they arrived was, “This place is awesome!”
Three of the six departments started classes the first week — Communication Sciences and Disorders, Nutrition and Health Care Management and Social Work. Public Health classes begin this week and the entire college expects to be fully moved in over the coming weeks.
The five-story building will house 14 of 16 existing BCHS programs, Wake Forest Physician Assistant Program and the Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC Institute for Health and Human Services. The Department of Recreation Management and Physical Education will remain at the Holmes Convocation Center.
Along with the high tech and innovative classrooms, the building will house faculty offices, a student information commons, an 192 seat lecture hall, an interprofessional health clinic, food innovation and exploration labs, exercise physiology and human performance labs, nursing simulation and clinical innovation labs, rehabilitative science labs, human anatomy and physiology labs, a human cadaver lab and numerous problem-based learning (PBL) and collaborative classrooms.
The LLHS building was partially financed by the Connect NC Bond package which was approved by state voters on March 15, 2016 and will be the first UNC system building to be completed with the support of the bond. The project was also made possible by the donation of 9.2 acres by Appalachian Region Healthcare System in 2012. In January, BCHS announced that the building would be named the Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences after receiving a $5 million grant from the Leon Levine Foundation of Charlotte.
The Grand Opening Celebration will be held September 21 at 1 p.m. The event will be held at the North Entrance and is open to the public. Please see invitation on the home page for parking and shuttle details.
