Boone, NC, May 1, 2019—The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (National NSSLHA) has awarded the NSSLHA Chapter at Appalachian State University with 2019 Silver Chapter Honors.

Efforts made by the NSSLHA Chapter at Appalachian State University helped National NSSLHA:

  • Increase awareness of communication sciences and disorders (CSD) on more than 100 local college campuses and communities across the country
  • Increase advocacy efforts by sending more than 10,000 letters to state and federal legislators
  • Provide scholarships to students in CSD programs by contributing to a donation of more than $18,000 to the ASHFoundation’s NSSLHA Scholarship

Olivia Maita, Fundraising Chair states, “I am so proud of the team unit that came together this past year! Working with my best friends and making new friends to make our club successful was such an honor. I was inspired by Emma’s leadership, and Joslyn worked so hard to make every single meeting, and event, a success! I am extremely proud of the engagement levels I saw in the general body members this year compared to past years. I believe that was greatly in part to the interesting variety of guest speakers and activities held at each meeting. The entire experience is one that taught me so much, and will stick with me for many years to come.”

Joslyn Parson, Vice President of Programming, states, “I am most proud of our fundraising events, the Zombie 5K and the Singing for Speech and Hearing performance. It provided a great opportunity to promote the professions of speech- language pathology & audiology while raising much-needed funds for our local Communication Disorders Clinic. Our monthly meetings were also a rich experience for our members and provided professional enrichment related to the Communication Disorders major in the College of Health Sciences.”

National NSSLHA Chapter Honors are awarded to affiliated NSSLHA chapters that demonstrate an outstanding effort to support National NSSLHA’s mission to inspire, empower, and support students in communication sciences and disorders programs.
