App State’s Beaver College of Health Sciences is sponsoring a special premiere of Stitching Strength, a 38-minute documentary featuring Duke University Medical Center neurologist Dr. Rick Bedlack and his unconventional approach to treating and inspiring patients who have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or ALS.
The free community event will be held Friday, Oct. 31, at 5:30 p.m. in Levine Hall (1179 State Farm Road, Boone) Dickson Lecture Hall 103, with support provided by App State Foundation Board member Brett Hoge, whose personal connection to ALS led him to establish the LVH ALS Foundation in 2014.
As one of the nation’s leading researchers for ALS, Bedlack’s approach to inspire optimism for his patients with his bold fashion choices and encouragement is featured in the film. Bedlack directs Duke University’s ALS program and plans to attend the Boone event to participate in a “Question and Answer” session after the documentary airs.
The film is described (on its website) as:
“At its heart is Dr. Rick Bedlack, a neurologist whose bold fashion and bolder optimism set the tone for a radically different kind of care. But this isn’t just his story. It’s about the patients who refuse to be defined by their diagnosis and the families who turn grief into art, music, and action.
This is not a story of surrender, it’s a story of style, strength, and the power of believing in what’s still possible.”
